These are generally low growing plants that prefer very well drained conditions. The use of a rockery can elevate the plants, bringing them closer to the eye. We tend to think of alpine plants as sparkling little gems for gritty raised beds, troughs, scree and gravel gardens, traditional rock gardens and pots in an unheated and well-ventilated greenhouse. But among these jewels are alpines that are a little more bold and punchy in their look that we can allow to develop into plants with real impact and which can be a focal point amongst their smaller neighbours.
